Scoria

Scoria is a naturally vesicular volcanic rock formed during explosive eruptions. As molten lava cools rapidly, trapped gases create a lightweight, porous structure, ideal for a wide range of construction and landscaping applications. Aerolite Scoria is extracted and screened from the hills of Anakie, Victoria, and is prized for its low density, stability, and excellent performance across commercial, civil and horticultural projects.

About Aerolite Quarries

Based in Anakie, Victoria, Aerolite Quarries has supplied scoria to the construction and landscaping industries for decades. With large-scale resource reserves and a long-standing reputation for consistency, Aerolite has become the trusted name in lightweight volcanic aggregates throughout Victoria and beyond. Now operating as part of Regional Group Australia, the legacy and capability of Aerolite continues, bringing lightweight innovation to infrastructure, landscaping, filtration, and more.

Located just outside Geelong, the Anakie quarry services Victoria’s growing infrastructure, development and landscaping sectors. The site’s proximity to major arterial roads allows for efficient transport and delivery to Melbourne, Ballarat, Geelong and surrounding regions.

Why Choose Scoria?

  • Lightweight Efficiency
Scoria is about half the weight of traditional aggregates, reducing freight costs, easing handling, and providing double the coverage per tonne.
  • Crushed & Screened to Spec
Aerolite scoria is precisely screened to meet the needs of engineers, landscapers, light-weight concrete suppliers and specifiers, ensuring reliable performance across every application.
  • Light-weight Concrete
Aerolite Black Concrete Aggregate is specifically used by pre-casters and masonry block manufacturers throughout Australia that are wanting to reduce the overall weight of their end products.
  • Moisture Retention
Its porous structure and high surface area allow the particles to hold water, making it ideal for potting mixes, rooftop gardens, and water-sensitive landscaping.
  • Fire Resistance
Scoria’s stable, glass-like composition offers excellent refractory properties, useful in fire-rated concrete and exposed settings.
  • Durability
Aerolite’s scoria does not break down or powder over time, delivering consistent results even in high-exposure environments.

Common Applications

  • Civil Construction
Bedding for pipes and conduits, lightweight structural fill, sub-surface drainage applications, NDCR for road base and subgrade improvement.
  • Reinforced Earth Wall
Lightweight, durable and permeable backfill material ideal for reinforced earth wall construction, improving drainage and reducing structural loading.
  • Concrete Production
Structural lightweight concrete with improved fire ratings, reduced dead load, and better noise and thermal insulation.
  • Landscaping & Horticulture
Mulch, soil conditioners, and potting mix blends that benefit from scoria’s moisture retention, drainage, and long-term stability.
  • Filtration & Water Storage
Used in rain gardens, underground reservoirs, and stormwater systems where clean, porous material improves water flow and retention.
  • Green Infrastructure
Rooftop gardens, vertical wall plantings, and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) benefit from scoria’s strength-to-weight ratio and stable composition.
  • Recreational Spaces
Used as sub-base in sports fields and golf courses due to its drainage properties and compaction performance.
  • Agriculture & Viticulture
Improves soil structure and water retention in farms and vineyards, while reducing bulk density for easier handling.
  • Energy & Industrial
Lightweight scoria is also used in energy infrastructure projects where reduced structural loading or fire resistance is required.
